On the Road Review: Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Toyota sells the most cars to consumers who revel in steady, consistent performance in the day-to-day driving of life. Top-selling car in America: Toyota Camry. Top selling hybrid — in the world: Toyota Prius. Top selling small-to-midsize pickup — in the world: Toyota Tacoma. Top-selling compact car — ever: Toyota Corolla. You get the picture.

Now, Toyota also has the top-selling compact crossover — in the class created by the original design — the latest RAV4. Buyers get two new versions of this Toyota for 2016, and we recently got to drive one of them, arguably the most important RAV4, for a week.

All RAV4s receive enhanced front and rear fascias in a mid-cycle styling exercise for 2016, with some trim levels benefiting from more LED lights than others. The look is smoother, calmer and more pleasing — combined with some new paint schemes, the latest RAV4 looks like a completely new wagon. There are new electronics inside, new materials — including Softex simulated leather — plus a wider array of driving aids available on top XLE and Limited trim.

Slotted between the latter two trims is a new SE package with a sportier stance, a stiffer chassis and the assertion that this family crossover at least has more sporting pretense. Starting at just over $30,000 for front-drive versions, the SE uses the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as other RAV4s, so real-world performance remains virtually the same.

The game-changer addition to the lineup is the much-anticipated RAV4 Hybrid.

Toyota has been building hybrid synergy drive vehicles for almost 20 years, with the original Prius going on sale in Japan in 1997. Millions of Priuses have been sold worldwide, so there is an obvious proficiency for what this battery/electric motor/gas engine powertrain can and cannot do. Toyota has put hybrid powertrains in four different Prius body styles, the Camry sedan, several Lexus sedans as well as the Highlander crossover.

Car review: 2016 Toyota Camry Special Edition

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

In an age when quality and fit and finish can often be sketchy, kudos must go to Toyota for its laser beam-like focus in producing vehicles that are both safe and reliable.

Toyota is boosting the momentum of America’s best-selling passenger car by adding a new Special Edition for 2016 and upgrading an already cutting-edge line of multimedia systems. I recently spent a week with a 2016 Special Edition and came away comforted the vehicle remains a great choice for many consumers..

The redesigned 2016 Camry introduces a new chiseled design that effortlessly cheats the wind.

The most fun I’ve had behind the wheel this year was with Toyota’s unusual vision for the future of mobility

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

The future of mobility is an exciting frontier that everyone in the automotive world is trying to explore. As a result, companies have taken creative and odd approaches to meet the challenge.

Recently, Toyota gave me the chance to test out their i-Road concept. The i-Road is one of Toyota proposed solutions to solving urban transportation.

To be honest, most of the prospective future mobility offerings I’ve seen thus far have either been impractical, boring to drive — or just flat out strange.

When it comes to cars, I’m a traditionalist. I love the visceral experience that a great drive can engender. The sound of the engine, the shifting of the gears, and the feedback from the steering. In the right car, it all comes together to create perfection. Although speed is often a fun aspect of a great car, it isn’t entirely necessary — you can chase some thrills without eye-tearing 0-60 acceleration.

So it was with a bit of apprehension that I tried out Toyota’s i-Road concept.

In one of the large halls of New York’s Javits Center, I got my first look at one of Toyota’s “urban mobility solutions.”

At first sight, the three-wheeled i-Road is anything but boring. It’s not quite what I would call a “car,” but it’s so much more than an electric scooter with a canopy. What the design allowed Toyota to do was combine the small, nimble characteristics of a scooter with the wet-weather capabilities and driving stability of a small city car.

There’s a new Toyota Prius on the market — and the car still beats everyone else in one important way

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016

Over the past 20 years, the Toyota Prius has been the world’s most successful “alternative”-fuel vehicle, largely because it doesn’t depend on that fuel — electricity. Rather, it runs a gas-and-electric motor at the same time, most of the time, to maximize mpg’s and minimize emissions.

Over 3 million Priuses have been sold globally — 3 million!

The Prius said “Hello, world!” for the first time in 1997, in Japan. Back then, the car was effectively a Toyota Echo sedan with the “Hybrid Synergy” drivetrain dropped in. That was enough to get the ball rolling, and in 2001 the Prius came to America, and America never looked back. “Hybrid” became a household word, and as gas prices rose in the 2000s and SUVs slipped in popularity, the Prius had the first-mover advantage to end them all.
