2016 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid Test Drive

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

The Toyota Rav4 Hybrid is everything Toyota does best, distilled into a single vehicle. It’s roomy like a Camry, hauls a lot of stuff like a Tacoma or Sienna, and is efficient like a Prius. How efficient? Its EPA rating is 33 mpg combined. That’s tops not only among SUVs (tied with its Lexus NX 300h AWD fraternal twin), but also among all-wheel-drive vehicles. At least the ones you don’t plug in.

The Rav4 Hybrid is actually half an electric car. The rear wheels are driven by an electric motor that’s not mechanically connected to the four-cylinder engine, second electric motor and CVT transmission that are tucked under the hood. Everything is synchronized through computer magic.

5 Fast Facts: 2016 Toyota Tundra

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

If you are researching large pickups, here are five fast facts about the 2016 Toyota Tundra:

  1. The Tundra pickup is offered in 2-wheel- or 4-wheel-drive. In addition to the TRD Pro trim package off-road version, the Tundra line includes the SR, volume-leading SR5, Limited, and two premium trims—Platinum and 1794 Edition. For 2016, the SR5 and 1794 Edition trims feature front-end styling updates along with standard trailer-brake control.
  2. The 2016 Tundra offers three cab styles: 2-door Regular Cab, 4-door Double Cab, and 4-door CrewMax. Short (6.5-ft.) and long (8.1-ft.) pickup beds are offered. The CrewMax, with a shorter 5.5-ft. bed, offers 42.3 in. of rear-seat legroom—as much as some premium sedans.
  3. Toyota powers the 2016 Tundra with a standard 4.6-liter V-8 engine that generates 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of torque. A 5.7-liter i-Force V-8 that produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of torque is available. Both engines are teamed with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
  4. Toyota’s upgraded Entune 2.5 multimedia system is available in all trims with upscale audio, navigation, and app suites offered on higher trim levels. The standard system includes a 6.1-in. touch-screen display with features including MP3 playback capability, USB ports, and smartphone connectivity.
  5. In addition to Toyota’s standard Star Safety System with stability and traction control and brake assist, advanced safety systems are available. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional on the SR5 and Limited but standard on Platinum and 1794 Edition trim levels.

Japan’s Toyota has the most made-in-the USA car: Camry

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

When it comes to finding the maker of the most American of U.S.-made cars — the one that’s built in an American factory with the most domestically produced parts — look no further than Japan.

Toyota and Honda are winning the race when it comes to having vehicles considered the most American, according to Cars.com.

For the second year in a row, the most popular car that is assembled in the U.S. with the required percentage of domestic content is the Toyota Camry, Cars.com’s annual survey shows. The top five vehicles all come from Toyota or Honda.

Why The Toyota Land Cruiser Is More SUV Than You’ll Ever Need

Tuesday, July 5th, 2016

But we wouldn’t change it one little bit.

The Land Cruiser is an SUV with a mountain of capability, but before delving into that, I must warn readers of two things that alter my bias. The first is that on orders from Toyota, we were not able to take the Land Cruiser, a vehicle that’s name alludes to its rock-masticating prowess, off of the pavement. Second, and most importantly, is the fact that I have an extensive history with the car, having done plenty of miles behind the wheel of the SUV in my second home country of Costa Rica.

Suffice it to say, the way I view the Land Cruiser, I may as well have been born inside of one. You can imagine my excitement when Toyota delivered the newly refreshed Land Cruiser to my door for a week of vetting. The SUV is one of the most incognito cult cars out there. If you have to ask about the club, well, refer to rules one and two of Fight Club. Toyota understands its legend and only allows its most experienced workers to construct the car.
